My next selection for a song that exemplifies 90’s Alternative is “I Think I’m Paranoid” by Garbage.
Garbage had a rich, slightly darker sound that relied heavily on distortion, electric guitars, and synthesizers (though this varied from song to song). A large part of their signature sound comes from the vocals of Shirley Manson, who provided very dynamic and often powerful vocals while still portraying a certain amount of subtlety and emotion. She also effectively captured that ‘girl power’ image of the 90’s that was strong and independent but not afraid to be provocative. On top of the strength of the band’s signature vocals, I was always under the impression that the other members of the band were talented musicians and songwriters as well. Their music had that sort of bitter and angst fueled feeling that many songs of this time period had (and one could probably argue reflected the feelings of many disillusioned teenagers in the 90’s). I don’t love every song by Garbage, some are much too melodramatic, but I feel like they had very solid pop sensibilities, and were good at crafting songs with great hooks and catchy choruses.
